Practical Info
Main airports are Salta (SLA) and Tucumán (TUC), with direct flights from Buenos Aires (2 hours). From Salta, easy access to Jujuy, Quebrada de Humahuaca, and Calchaquí Valleys. Buses from Buenos Aires also available (18-22 hours).
April to November (autumn-winter-spring), with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. December to March is rainy season, which can make access to some areas on gravel roads difficult. Carnival (February) is a unique experience.
Climate varies by altitude. In valleys: dry and temperate. In the puna (above 3,500m): cold and dry with large temperature range (up to 30°C difference between day and night). Intense sun year-round. Rainfall concentrated in summer.
Layered clothing (large temperature range), SPF 50+ sunscreen (high altitude sun), sunglasses, cap, warm clothing for nights and puna, comfortable closed shoes, coca leaves or altitude sickness pills.
